After picking up its third consecutive Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama, we're really hoping that "Mad Men" will finally find an audience with mainstream America. It's a double-edged sword though, as a large part of "Men's" zeitgeist appeal is its cult status as a throwback, slow-burn drama that doesn't spell out every single plot point 17 times, just in case you missed it the first 16.
Now household names, the cast was virtually unknown before landing their big break on the 1960s-era show. Jon Hamm, who stars as Don Draper, had a bit part in "We Were Soldiers," January Jones played Stifler's love interest in the third "American Pie" film, and office bombshell Christina Hendricks starred in a video for the 1990s rock band Everclear. Elisabeth Moss, who portrays career girl Peggy Olsen, comments in the photo feature, "Matt [Weiner, the show's creator] always says that he basically hired a bunch of not-famous people, but people that had been working for a really long time."
Hamm admits that like his mysterious character, he too likes to keep a low profile. "I fly very low on the radar. Mark Twain said it: 'I'd rather say nothing and be thought an idiot than open my mouth and remove all doubt.' Another Missouri boy, Mark Twain. The petulant, sh--ty movie-star mentality -- that burns out pretty quick."
